Air Support Unit

Northumbria Police Air Support Unit

Welcome to the North East Air Support Unit (NEASU), home of India99.

The NEASU is a consortium of the Northumbria and Durham police forces with its purpose to provide efficient and effective air support to both police forces. The NEASU first became operational in 1989 as Northumbria Police Air Support Unit, now supporting over 4,000 Northumbria police officers and police staff.

The North East Air Support Unit utilises a Eurocopter EC135T2 helicopter that is fully equipped for police operations and is jointly owned by both police forces. On average the helicopter is in flight 1240 hours each year and can be deployed in support of specific incidents and operations, such as searching for suspects and missing people as well as carrying out lifesaving tasks.

Each week we'll be adding two videos, each featuring a different aspect of the helicopter and the work it carries out.

All of the Air Support videos are also available on our YouTube channel;or on our Helicopter Videos page

The unit is comprised of an executive officer and a deputy executive officer. In addition nine constable air observers, drawn from both police forces, and a police staff air observer are part of the NEASU. All observers are experienced police officers and are qualified to a national standard.

5 commercial pilots, all former military, are employed by an aviation contractor to provide piloting of the aircraft.
