Equality and Human Rights Scheme

The Equality Act 2010 replaces discrimination laws with a single Act and is effective from 1 October 2010.  The Act strengthens the law to help tackle discrimination and inequality. In preparation for this Northumbria Police, in 2009, developed, in conjunction with local partners and key stakeholders a single Equality and Human Rights Scheme.

The Scheme will help Northumbria Police to improve the accessibility of employment opportunities, information and service provision for all strands of diversity.

The key elements of the Equality Act are discussed within the Equality and Human Rights Scheme and include:

  • Protected characteristics

  • The term ‘protected characteristics’ includes age, disability, sex, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, race, religion or belief, and in many but not all instances, marriage / civil partnerships and pregnancy / maternity.

In decision making, organising events, writing or reviewing policies, procedures and practices and in completing equality impact assessments (EIA’s), consideration is given to the ‘protected characteristics’ described within the Scheme.
