Age
The North East has an ageing population with one of the highest number of over sixties in England. The rural north and west have an older age profile with the south and east urban areas having a younger one.
The region’s age profile is generally consistent with our workforce profile except for police officers in the 55-64 age group. This is because there is a national compulsory retirement age for police officers.
Age equality is important to Northumbria Police. We recognise the contribution and different skills younger and older people can have when dealing with the public and delivering an effective policing service.
We also recognise the problems caused by ageism and the dramatic effects the attitudes of others can have on people’s quality of life, access to services and choice. We are actively working with the community and our partners at present to help improve the perception of children and young people within the force area.
