Our Performance

Our performance in relation to equality and diversity is monitored by the Diversity Strategy Forum, which is chaired by Assistant Chief Officer Bernie McCardle and attended by representatives from the Northumbria Police Authority and the Chairs of our internal Support Associations.

In conjunction with our Police Authority we set employment targets to help create and maintain a workforce reflective of our community.  Our current employment targets to be achieved by 31 March 2009 are as follows:

Employment AreaTargetPerformance (as at June 1, 2009)Comment
% of minority ethnic officers recruited3.4%
0%There have been no police officer intakes in May 2009
% of new appointments to police strength which are female47%24.80%
% of ethnic minority officers in force1.5%1.51%

We are currently working with our Police Authority to set a wider range of challenging employment targets.  These will be made available for public consultation in July 2009.

We are keen to further enhance our performance framework in relation to equality and diversity to enable us to measure the difference we have made to individuals, staff and the community.

We are therefore piloting the Equality Standard for the Police Service. This is a performance tool developed by the National Police Improvement Agency (NPIA).

We hope the outcome of this pilot will be the development of an effective tool to help us identify gaps in the area of equality and diversity which we can address in order to achieve outcomes and improvements to ultimately help build community confidence.
