Religion and Belief
Religion and belief considers meanings, values, hopes and things which go beyond physical boundaries.
The North East is one of the least religiously diverse regions in the country. Within the force area, Newcastle is the only area with considerable communities of religious diversity. The most practiced religions within the force area, after Christianity, are Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, Judaism and Buddhism.
People practising their faith sometimes experience prejudice, attacks and religious abuse. We recognise the important role we play within society, to help create a community where individuals can freely express their faith. We actively work with community leaders and make ourselves known in communities which experience crimes motivated by religious prejudice.
Within our workforce we have religious diversity. We believe it is important to actively collect data about the religious faiths of our staff, as understanding this religious diversity will help us develop our internal policies and practices and assist us in reflecting the communities we serve.
