Intelligence

Intelligence assesses and scopes new intelligence for development into operational packages to target identified criminal and organised crime networks.

The Force Analytical Unit comes under this section and provides the research and analysis capability across operational policing including Central Strategic, Tactical and Investigative teams, Homicide, Area Commands, Special Branch and Economic Crime.

Charged with interpreting and understanding the information and intelligence available, these staff play a key role in supporting decision making across the force.

Covert Intelligence

Covert Intelligence consists of three sections:

Special Branch

Special Branch makes a crucial contribution to protecting Northumbria and the UK  against threats to national security from:

  • espionage,

  • terrorism,

  • domestic extremism, and

  • countering the procurement by foreign countries of material, technology or expertise relating to weapons of mass destruction.

To do this Special Branches cooperate closely with the Security Service. Special Branches exist primarily to acquire intelligence, to assess its potential operational value and to contribute more generally to its interpretation. They do so in order to meet local policing needs and to assist the Security Service in carrying out its statutory duty to protect national security. We also provide security advice to a range of organisations in the public and private sectors. This is undertaken by our Counter Terrorism Security Advisers.

We also contribute to the fight against serious crime, though our work at the country’s air and maritime borders that are covered by Northumbria Police.
