Criminal Justice
The Department sections are:
Witness Care Unit
A joint service with the Crown Prosecution Service based at St Anne’s Quay, Newcastle. They establish and maintain contact with witnesses to improve confidence and satisfaction in the Criminal Justice System resulting in fewer ineffective trials because of witness difficulties.
Victim Bureau
The Victim Bureau is based at Headquarters, providing all victims of crime with information about local support services and contact details within two days of a crime being recorded. This is in line with the Victims Code of Practice.
They also provide victims with a monthly update on their investigation until someone is arrested or the crime cannot be investigated further.
Crime and Incident Audit
Based at Cramlington, this is headed by a Force Crime & Incident Registrar and is responsible for:
Ensuring all reports of incidents, whether they result in a crime or not, are recorded and counted in accordance with national standards.
Conducting a range of audits to provide management information.
The section provides professional advice and guidance to officers and police staff on crime and incident codes and various detection methods.
Central Information Bureau
Based at Cramlington, it provides the following functions:
Crime Recording
This section creates crime reports on the force Crime Recording System and operates 24 hours a day.
