Operations Command
This provides unique and specialist policing services area commands and headquarter departments.

The department is divided into three sections: Operations, Planning & Co-ordination and Business Support, including:
Firearms Support Unit
The Firearms Support Unit (FSU) provides Armed Response Vehicle (ARVs) support.
It also provides specialist firearms and policing support across the force area. FSU officers are also involved in close protection duties for Royal visitors and VIPs.
Mounted Section
Northumbria Police horses and their officers carry out regular patrols in towns and villages throughout the force. Officers on horseback have the advantage of extra height and can often reach areas inaccessible to vehicles. This is especially important during searches, often for missing people, in remote countryside. Mounted officers bring specialist skills to policing public order situations like football matches and fulfill ceremonial roles.
Marine Unit
The Marine Unit provides the force with diving and marine support. This can involve searches of waterways and confined spaces such as drains and culverts. The unit also provides specialist advice and training for diver and marine work to other agencies and supports the neighbouring forces of Durham and Cleveland.
Metro Unit
Officers in the Metro Unit police the Tyne and Wear Metro system to reduce crime and disorder and increase public reassurance. Officers work closely with transport operators Nexus and the five area commands where the Metro system passes.
