Northumbria Police Authority

Every police force in the UK has a corresponding police authority, which in Northumbria is the Northumbria Police Authority.

Northumbria  Police Authority monitors the work of Northumbria Police. Of the 17 people  who make up Northumbria Police Authority nine are local councillors from Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Sunderland, South Tyneside and  Northumberland and eight are independent members from local communities. Police authorities do not include representatives from the police.

The role of the Police Authority is to:

  • Appoint the Chief Constable and ensure that they are doing a good job for the people of Northumbria

  • Make sure local people get the best possible service from Northumbria Police

  • Listen to what local people say and get the police to focus on their concerns

  • Make sure Northumbria Police spends its budget wisely and in a way that meets needs of local people

  • Monitor and raise concerns to be addressed by the Chief Constable

The Northumbria Police Authority is chaired by Mick Henry, a local councillor from Bensham, Gateshead, and leader of Gateshead Council.
