AIM OF POLICY: To outline the objectives of the Metro Unit, established within Operations Command for the policing of the Metro system.
BENEFIT OF POLICY: Protection and reassurance for members of the public using the Metro system.
REASON FOR POLICY: Human Rights Act 1998, Article 2 (Protect life)
DESCRIPTION OF POLICY:
In order to ensure a more effective policing of the Metro System and its environs, the Metro Unit will generally remain on the Metro System. It will only be detailed away from the system in an immediate emergency situation, or on the instruction of Operations Command.
The unit is responsible for initiating liaison with Area Command staff, Metro staff and the Force Intelligence Bureau through the National Intelligence Model with a view to maximising a co-ordinated response to policing issues on the Tyne and Wear Metro System.
The Metro Unit have Police Support Unit (PSU) tactical level 2 status.
