Roads Policing & Casualty Reduction

Technology and engineering have made today's cars safer, reducing the number of fatal and serious injuries sustained by drivers and passengers. Sadly, pedestrians and motorcyclists remain the most vulnerable of all road users and represent a disproportionate number of the people killed or seriously injured on our roads.

More than half of road deaths are associated with one or more of:

  • Drink driving, or driving whilst impaired through drugs

  • Speeding

  • Careless driving (includes dangerous)

  • Distraction (including mobile phone use)

  • Failure to wear seat belts.

This is why Northumbria Police will proactively target drivers or riders who pose a risk to other road users; to reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries occurring on our roads. We will seek to achieve these reductions through education, enforcement or engineering.

Think! Road safety logoTHINK! is a government road safety campaign. Its aim is to encourage safer behaviour to reduce the number of people killed and injured on our roads every year.

All road users have a responsibility to ensure that their actions - or lack of action - do not put others or themselves at risk.
