Selection procedure
Stage 4. Medical examination and fitness test
Medical
During the medical examination you will be seen by a nurse and the Force Medical Advisor, who is a doctor.
The Force Medical Advisor's role is to ask relevant questions about your medical history. He will also carry out a physical examination to check your heart, abdomen, eyes, ears and mouth. Your reflexes will also be checked and anything else seen as relevant to your medical history. The nurse will also carry out various checks, including:
Blood pressure and pulse measurement
Height and weight measurement
Lung function test
Hearing test
Urinalysis procedure
Substance misuse test
Northumbria Police is committed to providing a safe, healthy and productive working environment therefore all candidates will be drugs tested during the medical examination.
It is acknowledged that the use of illegal drugs and the misuse of prescription drugs can:
Harm a person’s health
Cause a person to act or behave in an unsafe manner
Be a major contributory factor in accidents (often involving not only that person but their colleagues and the public)
Reduce a person’s productivity
Adversely affect a person’s integrity, putting their own and the force’s reputation at risk
Whilst providing a sample for drug testing is voluntary and will not be done without the written consent of the candidate, it is a condition of entry and an application will not proceed unless consent is given and a sample provided for testing.
