Will I get a uniform?

Yes, all police volunteer cadets will be issued with a cadet uniform which includes:

  • Trousers and polo shirt

  • High-vis jacket

  • Beret

  • Coat

You will need to provide your own black leather shoes, available from approved suppliers. Details issued upon joining.

Who can become a volunteer police cadet?

You need to be 14 or 15 and live in one of the areas listed below. This is because cadets will be involved with their local community. You also need to have lived in the UK for the last three years.

Where are cadets held?

  • Northumberland

  • Newcastle

  • North Tyneside

  • Gateshead

  • South Tyneside

  • Sunderland

How much does it cost?

Cadets are asked to pay £3 per week to cover some basic expenses.

I’m not in the age range what else can I do?

Once you are 18 you can volunteer as a Special Constable. Go to the website to see if this is something of interest.

Can I still join if I have been in trouble with the police?

This will be reviewed on a case by case basis, however young people from all backgrounds are invited to apply.

Will it help me join the police service?

The Volunteer Police Cadet scheme will give you an insight into policing and will help you to make career choices. Participation is not a guaranteed route to becoming a Police Officer.
