Selection procedure
Stage 2. Assessment Centre
If successful at the scoring of the application form, you will be invited to an assessment centre. The assessment centre consists of the Police Initial Recruitment Test, written tests, interactive role play exercises and an interview.
The Police Initial Recruitment Test (PIRT)
The PIRT is used because it gives us an indication of whether or not you possess certain skills which are required to become a CSO. The tests measure your ability to:
Solve numerical problems accurately
Reason logically when you are given facts about events.
Each test has a time limit therefore you must be able to work as quickly and accurately as you can. The more questions you get right the higher your score therefore, do not waste time on difficult questions; move on to the next and come back to them if you have time at the end of the test.
There is a book available on the market entitled "How to Pass the Police Initial Recruitment Test". The authors are Thomas, Tolly and Tolly and the book is published by Kogan Page. The book is full of example questions which are typical of those featured in the PIRT. By practicing with the book you will become familiar with the test and able to get into the mode of working quickly and accurately.
Applicants who have sat the test and failed and then purchased the book before sitting a subsequent test have seen their scores increase significantly. You will receive more information about the written tests and interactive role play exercises prior to attending the assessment centre.
