Applying for the grant of a firearm

Part B - refers to details of firearms and ammunition.  In the case of a grant, questions 17 and 18 should normally be answered as “none”.

Q19: Please complete all four columns in respect of each weapon requested, including “Reason” in column 3 and “Where you intend to use it” in column 4.  “Reason” is probably the most misunderstood single item relating to firearms.  Remember you must provide good reason for each and every weapon you request.  For more information see what makes “Good Reason” in the FAQ section. Written permission from a land owner also needs to be supplied with the application form.

Q20:
You must be able to safely store “overall total” of ammunition you are requesting separately from your firearms.  Ensure you have requested ammunition for each of the calibre weapons requested, except those that are muzzle loading.  It is normal to ask to be allowed to possess a slightly larger amount than you are allowed to buy. This allows you to “top up” your ammunition before completely running out.

Q21: You should ask for the amount of ammunition you want to buy or acquire, within reason, at any one time.

Part C - concerns the storage of your firearms and ammunition. In most circumstances this will be at your home address, however it can be stored elsewhere like at another certificate holder’s home address or your gun club.

Part D - refers to any other certificates you currently hold, or have held in the past.  All the questions are straight forward and help on Q25b can be found in our category on coterminous shot gun certificates.

Part E - relates to referees and is fully explained under referees section.

Part F (on reverse of Form 101) - is the declaration the applicant must sign and date.  If the applicant is under 17 years of age, the declaration must be countersigned by a parent or legal guardian.  Also see age restrictions.

After your application is received, the necessary checks will take place. Once these have been completed you will be contacted by the Enquiry Officer covering your area who will arrange an appointment to visit your home address to discuss your application and give any advice needed on security.

If your application is refused your fee and photographs will be returned.
