Domestic abuse happens every day, in every part of the UK. Each minute in the UK, the police receive a call from the public for assistance about domestic abuse. The results can be horrific: from loss of self-confidence and cuts and bruises to complete mental breakdowns and, in the worst cases, murder.
Northumbria Police force is committed to protecting the lives of both adult and child victims of domestic abuse, investigating all reports effectively, bringing offenders to justice and holding them accountable for their actions, and adopting a proactive multi-agency approach to prevent and reduce domestic abuse.
Northumbria Police defines domestic abuse as ‘any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse (psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional) between adults, aged 18 and over, who are or have been intimate partners or are family members, regardless of gender and sexuality’. Domestic abuse is not acceptable under any circumstances.
Northumbria Police is divided into six area commands with a Public Protection Unit in each. Within every Public Protection Unit there is a Domestic Abuse Investigation Unit with trained and experienced domestic abuse investigators, who are dedicated to tackling the issue.
If you are experiencing domestic abuse, or are worried about a friend or family member, you can contact your local office for help, advice and support.
A number of other support agencies can be found in the Support Services section, which can provide advice and support to victims of domestic abuse.
