Personal safety

It's natural to feel more vulnerable when out walking at night, as there are fewer people around.

You can stay safer by following these tips:

  • Try and let someone know your movements, schedule and route. If your plans change, tell them.

  • Plan ahead: places and routes you use during the day can change considerably after dark. It's always best to avoid poorly-lit subways, car parks and open areas.

  • Choose well lit and busy areas for your journey after dark.

  • If you do find yourself in trouble, try to keep calm and get away - head for places where there are other people you can ask for help.

  • If you are trapped, bring attention to yourself, making as much noise as possible by shouting for help or for someone to contact the police. Shouting 'fire' could get the best response.

  • Try not to make it obvious that you're carrying valuables like mobile phones, cash or cards.

  • If you're out jogging or walking, listening to music through headphones can cut you off from activity around you and traffic. It's better to stay alert to what's going on around you.

  • If you see someone else in danger, help them by contacting police as soon as possible.

  • You may feel safer if you carry a personal attack alarm.

* If you decide to defend yourself from a potential attacker, be aware that they may be stronger than you. You can use reasonable force in self-defence or to protect yourself.
