Northumbria Police welcomes you to the North East

The Police in the UK are friendly and helpful, they have a duty to protect everyone and can always be safely approached; Northumbria Police is committed to helping you reduce your risk of crime to ensure that you enjoy your stay and studies here as much as possible.
We are here to help you, if you come to us we won’t think you are causing trouble and we won't tell everyone about your problems. We work very closely with all the universities, their international offices, and their students’ unions to keep our students safe.
We know that coming to a new country can be daunting. Below is some useful information to help you settle and answer any questions you may have.
Registration
When you first arrive; you may need to register with the police. Check your Visa from the British Embassy to confirm this.
Students from the following countries must register with the police within seven days of arriving in the UK:
Afghanistan, Algeria, Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Belarus, Bolivia, Brazil, China, Colombia, Cuba, Egypt, Georgia, Hong Kong, iran, Iraq, Isreal, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kirghistan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Moldova, Morroco, North Korea, Oman, Palestine, Peru, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Yemen.
You will need to register with Northumbria Police Overseas Visitors Registration Office. In order to do so, you will need to download and complete the following form. [PDF]
You will be able to save the completed form and then send it by email to ovro-new@northumbria.pnn.police.uk
You will need to attach the saved PDF form to the message.
Please note: If you use web based email, such a Gmail or Yahoo Mail, the email link above wil not work.
However, you will still be able to send an email to ovro-new@northumbria.pnn.police.uk by starting a new message and typing in (cutting and pasting) this email address and then attaching the saved PDF form to the message.
On receipt of your registration document an appointment will be allocated. This will be either at the offices of OVRO,or at your University campus.
You will be charged a registration fee of £34 which must be paid in cash.
Cultural Differences
Some things in the UK are very different to what you experience at home.
Don’t trust strangers even if they say they come from the same area or culture as you. Not everyone is honest and trustworthy. Get to know them first.
Drink sensibly whether alcoholic or not – don’t leave your drinks unattended as someone could spike it by putting something in it without your knowledge.
Always lock your doors, In UK people cannot go into someone else’s house/room unless you invite them in.
Laws: Drugs / It is illegal to carry weapons of any kind in the UK
Racial Discrimination- If you are subjected to abuse or harassment because of your race or faith, report it to the Police / Uni – ARCH (Agency against racial crime and harassment) – third party reporting – anonymous reporting
