Motorists targeted in Blyth
Dated: 11 Mar 2010
Police in Blyth are tackling inconsiderate driving following complaints from residents on the Croft estate.
At a recent PACT (Police and Communities Together) meeting in the area attended by officers from Northumberland area command and partners from the local authority, residents from the Croft estate raised concerns about increased traffic going through their area as a result of Waterloo Road being closed.
Residents' complaints centred around drivers speeding, driving without due care and attention and entering streets with 'no entry' signs on them - with the problem areas mainly being Bondicar Terrace, Croft Road and Middleton Street.
Blyth Acting Inspector Paul Race said: "I'm really pleased that residents in the Croft area made the effort to come and attend the local PACT meeting. As a result, we were told about the problems that local people were having with the increased traffic through their neighbourhoods. Now that we know about it, we can start to take action.
"Over the next week officers and CSOs from the neighbourhood team will be working with traffic wardens from the council and will be carrying out extra patrols in the affected streets. We will be focusing our attention on motorists and taking firm action on anyone driving unsafely or not obeying road signs."
It is expected that Waterloo Road will be closed for around six to ten weeks and police will be monitoring the situation throughout that time.
