Prisoners classed as being Category A, B or C are held in closed prisons.

These have security measures which stop inmates escaping.

Category D prisoners are held in open prisons where they can wander around freely but must attend daily roll calls.

Inmates normally have their own rooms with their own key and can have a small TV as well as a bed, locker, table and chair.
