A crime is doing something that is against the law. The law is a set of rules to keep us safe and protect us. If people do things that break the law then you can help to do something about it.

Carrying a knife
Hurting or attacking someone
Taking drugs
Damaging property
Sometimes the police need to attend to crimes as quickly as possible, normally when a crime is being committed there and then, for example when someone is being attacked. This is called an emergency.
