Northumbria Police Area Commands

The Angel of the North

Local policing services are delivered by the six area commands which are based on local authority boundaries.

Newcastle, Gateshead, South Tyneside, North Tyneside and Sunderland are all predominantly urban, while Northumberland has both urban and rural areas.

Each area command is divided into policing sectors which have both response and neighbourhood policing teams.

The area commands each have a Chief Superintendent who operates at a strategic level, working with partners.

They are supported by an Operations Superintendent, Community Chief Inspector, Criminal Justice Chief Inspector and Business Manager who is supported by a team of senior police staff including Finance and Personnel Advisors.

Each year we publish a Local Policing Summary for every area command which is sent to every home and business in the force area.

Each area command is headed by a chief superintendent and supported by a management team of senior police officers and police staff.

The area commands are split into sectors, each with their own Neighbourhood Policing Team made up of police officers, detectives, community support officers and police staff.

Area commands also have what are called 24/7 response teams - officers who provide round-the-clock policing wherever and whenever it is needed.
