Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

Thank you for your email dated 10 November 2010 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

"For the calander year 2009 for the stretch of the River Tyne that flows through your force area, please supply

  1. How many people jump in the Tyne trying to commit suicide?

  2. How many dead bodies are recovered from the Tyne each year?

  3. How many people (alive) are recovered from the Tyne each year?"

In response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

In order to provide the information requested it has been necessary to search all incidents recorded as being "Marine incident", "Missing from home", "Concern for safety" and with the following keywords, "Body in river", "River Tyne", "Suicide", "Drown", "Fallen", "Jump", "Concern for male", "Concern for female", "Dead", "Bridge" and "Floating".

  1. There were 28 incidents Identified where an individual was trying to jump into the River Tyne.  Of those 28, 8 people carried out their intention to jump into the river.

    It should be noted that suicides are a matter for HM Coroners and only a coroner can confirm suicide.

  2. For the year 2009 of those people that jumped 2 people were recovered dead.

  3. For the year 2009 of those people that jumped 6 people were recovered alive.
