Data Protection at Northumbria Police

The Data Protection Act 1998

Northumbria Police processes personal data (information about living people) by computer.

The principal purposes of this are to prevent and detect crime; apprehend and prosecute offenders; protect life and property; maintain law and order and help the public in line with force policies and procedures. Information is also processed for the administration of the force and its employees.

Subject Access

People have a right of access to personal data held about them and can make an application through the procedure ‘Subject Access’ (Data Protection Act 1998). This is available by contacting:

Subject Access forms can be forwarded by post to the above address and must be accompanied by:

  • A copy of an identification document, eg birth certificate, current passport

  • British driving licence – do not send originals, copies will not be returned

There is a £10 application fee and cheques should be made payable to Northumbria Police through a British Clearing Bank.

A copy of the subject access form is available in two formats. You can print this out and send it to the Information Compliance Unit at the address on the form, along with a copy of your identification and the fee.

Police Certificates

Anyone needing a Police Certificate to apply for emigration, visas, work permits or residency in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the United States should download the application form for an ACPO Police Certificate from the ACPO website.

Please note: This certificate is processed entirely by the ACPO Criminal Records Office (ACRO) and all submissions and enquiries should be made to ACRO, through the following routes:
