Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act').

Thank you for your email dated 10th February 2011 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

  1. How many force employees, both officers and police staff, are currently suspended and/or charged with offences following investigations by the Professional Standards Unit?

  2. What is the rank/position of those suspended and /or charged and what offences are each alleged to have committed?

  3. Over the past three years, how many force employees have been convicted/disciplined/dismissed as a result of investigations by the Professional Standards Unit?

  4. What is the rank/position of those convicted/disciplined/dismissed and what offences did each commit?

  5. Of those convicted/disciplined/dismissed as a result of investigations by the PSU, how many had prior criminal convictions or been through internal disciplinary proceedings?

In response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Profession Standards Department of Northumbria Police.  I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police

I have today decided to disclose the located information to you in full as follows.

Please note that the information below relates to police officers, special constables, police staff and CSO’s. The information for Q1 and Q2 is based upon information available as of 10/02/2011. From Q3 – Q5, this information  is based upon complaints and subjects attached to cases finalised between 01/01/2008 and 31/12/2010. Please note that this is a ‘Live’ database and may be subject to the addition and deletion of complaints, complainants and subjects after the initial extraction of data used for the purposes of this report.

Please also note that the previous discipline information at question 5 is based upon officers who have been attached to complaints and conduct/misconduct cases which resulted in a finding of substantiated, Guilty, warning, or case to answer only.
With the above in mind please see the below which answers your query.

3-5.  The document attached below contains information relevant to these parts of your request.
