Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')(FOIA)

Thank you for your email dated 22 September 2011 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.  

You asked:

  1. Does your force employ (either directly or indirectly) a physical activity coordinator, physical training instructor (PTI) or similar role and are they responsible for the promotion of physical activity within your force?  For each individual you employ within one of these roles, please identify:- 

    a. Role Title
    b. Full or Part-time
    c. Number of years post has existed
    d. Is promotion of physical activity included in the role profile?
    e. Mode of employment: Direct, Contract, Agency, Outsourced, Other (please specify)

  2. Which of the following provisions does your force make to support staff in being physical activity?
     
    a. Flexitime
    b. Gym facilities
    c. Showers and changing facilities
    d. Organised exercise classes
    e. Cycle to work scheme
    f. Bike sheds
    g. Health and wellbeing advice
    h. Sourced discounts with local gyms
    i. Outsourced services such as advice websites e.g. Revitalised
    j. Other (please specify)

  3. How much money your force spent on various aspects of promoting and supporting physical activity over the last 3 financial years (broken down by fy) on:-

    a. Salary costs (including on costs) for a physical activity coordinators, PTIs or similar roles.
    b. Capital expenditure on purchase of new gym equipment or facilities
    c. Ongoing provision of exercise classes, maintenance contracts for gym equipment and facilities etc.
    d. Promotion of physical activity, health and wellbeing days etc

  4. Please state the actual numbers of police officers and police staff employees working for your force on each of the following dates:-
    a. 31 March 2011
    b. 31 March 2010

In response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the HR Department of Northumbria Police.  I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

I have decided to disclose the located information to you as follows.

1.

a-e No information held. Northumbria Police does not employ individuals in such roles.

g.  The Force's Occupational Health Unit provide professional advice to all officers and staff.
h.  The force does not source such discounts however discounts sourced by individuals and the NPSSC are open to all staff
i.  No
j.   A number of departments across the Force have been working towards NHS led "Better Health at Work Award". This involves local promotional events in conjunction with various Primary Care Trusts which officers and staff are invited to attend.

3. 

a-d The Force does not incur any costs in relation to this. The organisation works in conjunction with the Northumbria Police Sports and Social Club (NPSSC). This private company is owned by members of the Force and contributes significantly to the facilities available to staff and officers.
