Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act').

Thank you for your email dated 2 February 2011 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

  1. The number of criminal complaint files dealt with by your force.  To clarify, by criminal complaint files I mean any report of crime. I am trying to establish what percentage of crimes are dealt with by non-court action

  2. The number of these files dealt with by non-court action (such as cautions, fixed penalty notices and final warnings).

Please provide numbers for each of the last 3 financial years (08/09, 09/10 and 10/11).

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police.  I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

The below table provides information concerning total crime and those crimes which are finalised without court involvement or action.

The 'Non-court Action' figure includes Cautions, Penalty Notices for Disorder and Cannabis Warnings.
