Dated: 29 Nov 2011

Items including a TV and a ring were taken in a house burglary in Gateshead.

The burglary happened sometime between 1.30pm last Friday, November 25 and 10.15pm on Monday, November 28 when a thief got into a house in Shotley Gardens through a ground floor window.

Officers are reminding house owners to make sure doors and windows are locked, even when at home, and that timer switches are used in one or more rooms when going out.

Neighbourhood Inspector Paul Hamilton, said: "In the run up to Christmas officers on patrol are providing crime prevention advice. In particular we're urging people to protect their possessions and keep them out of sight, both at home and in their cars.

"It's also a good idea to register possessions on the free to use immobilise.com register so recovered stolen items can be returned to their owners.

"We're asking residents to watch out for their neighbours, particularly the vulnerable and elderly, and to report any suspicious activity or unknown callers to police so we can check out whether or not it's genuine."

Over the past 12 months there have been 400 fewer burglaries in the Gateshead South area, equal to a 13.4per cent reduction.
