Distraction theft in supermarket

Police are appealing for witnesses after a thief distracted an elderly woman and stole her bag in a Gateshead supermarket.

Around 1:45pm on Thursday, February 2, a 78-year-old woman was shopping in Sainsbury's, Team Valley when she was approached by a woman who distracted her and stole her handbag from her shopping bag.

The handbag contained her purse, cash and a number of personal belongings.

The offender is described as around 5ft 2ins tall, very slim and spoke in a foreign accent.

Shoppers are reminded to be vigilant and pay attention to their personal belongings at all times.
