Residents urged to lock their doors in Ashington
Dated: 08 Feb 2012
Police are urging residents in Ashington to lock their doors - even if only leaving the house for minutes.
Between 6:20pm and 7pm on Monday, February 6, burglars got into a house in Portia Street through an unlocked door.
Once inside they stole a Nintendo DS games console and a handbag containing cash before making off.
The occupant had left the house to visit neighbours and had left her front door unlocked when burglars struck.
Ashington Inspector Kevin Oates said: "The victim had popped next door to see neighbours and left the front door unlocked. Opportunist burglars spotted this chance and helped themselves.
"We need people to think about crime prevention more and about protecting their property. An unlocked door is like an invitation for burglars. Lock your home whenever you leave it and help keep thieves out.
"Always report any suspicious behaviour, anyone hanging around, any vehicle you don't know or anything at all you would like local officers to check out."
Anyone with any information into the burglary is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191 or by ringing Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
