Appeal after burglary

Police are investigating a burglary in South Tyneside.

It happened at about 5.40am on Saturday, February 18, at Leighton Street in South Shields, when burglars came into the house through an unlocked door.

The homeowner heard the front door slam and when he went to investigate found that four coats were missing from the hallway. These were recovered in the rear lane of Osborne Avenue.

Police are appealing for witnesses who saw suspicious activity in the area in the early hours of Saturday to contact them as soon as possible.

Residents are reminded to ensure their homes are secure at all times, including locking doors, even when inside the house. Additional patrols will be taking place in the area.
