Warning to gas meter thieves

Dated: 25 Feb 2012

Police in Northumberland are warning thieves about the dangers of stealing gas meters.

In recent months officers have received a number of reports of gas meters being stolen from houses across south east Northumberland.

Officers believe the offenders are stealing the meters and using them to replace their own ito defraud gas suppliers.

Not only is this an offence but criminals are putting themselves and others in danger by tampering with the systems.

Northumberland Superintendent Mick Paterson said: "I'd urge homeowners to be vigilant and report anything suspicious to police at the earliest opportunity. It's obviously dangerous for people to tamper with gas and these thieves are putting people in danger with their actions.

"A fraudulently replaced gas meter is extremely easy for engineers to spot. We've set up procedures so when engineers carry out checks and find gas meters which they think have been tampered with or stolen, they will report them to us and we'll come and pay the homeowner a visit."

Officers across Northumberland are working with partners and gas suppliers to address the issue and anyone with any information into gas meter thefts is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191.
