Aggravated burglary in Jarrow

Police are appealing for witnesses after an aggravated burglary in South Tyneside.

It happened at 8.45am this morning a man went into an address in Malton Court, Jarrow. A 46-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man in the address at the time suffered minor injuries. It's thought the man was armed with a weapon, which may have been either hammer or a bat. It's not thought this was used to cause the injuries.

Nothing was stolen during the burglary. The victims received treatment at hospital for minor injuries.

As part of their enquiries officers found tyres had been damaged on a car in Finchale Road and a car in Malton Court and believe these may be linked to this incident.

Detectives are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen anyone suspicious in Finchale Road or Malton Court at those times or who finds a discarded hammer or bat in the area.

A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and is currently in police custody.

A/Detective Inspector Alan Cairns, said: "We believe the people involved in these incidents are all known to each other.

"The weapon that was used, which was a hammer or bat, has been discarded and we're keen to locate it. If anyone finds it or knows where it is we'd urge them to contact police as this is a vital piece of evidence."
