"People can prevent garden intruders by installing strong fences or gates and growing thorny hedges around the boundary of the property.
"Good quality locks should be fitted to gates and fixed so that they can't be reached over the fence and external lighting should be installed - a dusk to dawn security light is recommended.
"If people are working in their garden they should remember to still lock doors and windows and never leave garages or sheds unlocked.
"Sheds should have security locks, padlocks and chains - close-shackle locks are designed to prevent the lock being cut with a saw.
"It's also a good idea to keep detailed records of your property inside a shed and to register it with immobilise - a free property registration service."
