CCTV released after city centre assault

Police are issuing CCTV images of people they want to trace and speak to in connection with a serious assault in Newcastle.

Shortly before 3.30am on Sunday, March 11, a group of men were walking under Blackett Bridge near the Monument in Newcastle city centre when they were approached by another group of men and women and then assaulted.

The victims headed towards St Andrew's Church but they were assaulted again and one of them suffered a head injury.

One injured man was taken to hospital where he received treatment for a fractured skull and a bleed on the brain.

He has since left hospital and has recovered from his injuries. The others assaulted did not need any hospital treatment.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or recognises any of the men in the images is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191 or ring the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

From CCTV police know that there were two women with the group of men when the assault took place.

Officers want to speak to these women as they might have vital information about the incident and are appealing to them to come forward and contact officers as soon as possible.

Both women are in their late teens to early twenties and brunette and were wearing distinctive outfits.

Officers are releasing CCTV images of the two women with their faces obscured for the purpose of the witness appeal.

If the women do not come forward officers will consider releasing images with their faces shown to the public.
