Man arrested after attempted robbery

A man has been arrested after a woman was injured in an attempted robbery in Gateshead.
About 6.45pm on Tuesday, July 31, a report was received that two men had gone into the home of a 71-year-old woman at an address in the Heworth area, off Shields Road between Heworth and Pelaw Metro Stations.
They threatened her and demanded she hand over property. They were disturbed by a neighbour and the two men ran off from the scene empty handed. The woman suffered minor injuries during the incident.
Following enquiries a 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and enquiries are ongoing. Police are still speaking with witnesses in the area and the investigation is in the early stages.
DI Andy Fairlamb said: "Enquiries are ongoing to find out exactly what has happened and we will be speaking to witnesses throughout today.
"A man is currently in custody and the investigation is ongoing. Additional patrols will be taking place in the area to reassure local people and anyone with information should get in touch with us as soon as possible."
