Wanted man jailed

Police in Newcastle have arrested a man wanted on warrant.

John Graham Tams, 31, formerly of Deerbush, in Newcastle, was wanted for failing to appear at court after being charged with GBH with intent and affray in 2006. A warrant was issued in September 2006.

In February 2007, he was convicted in his absence and sentenced to 7 years for the assault.

Earlier today, Friday, August 17, he was arrested at a house in Newcastle and appeared at Newcastle Crown Court later the same morning. He will now serve his sentence.

The charge related to an assault in March 2006. in the Peregrine Pub, in Chapel House Drive, in Chapel House, Newcastle where a man, who was 19 at the time, suffered stab wounds. He survived the attack but at the time was left in a serious condition in hospital.

DCI Ged Noble of Northumbria Police Major Crime Team, said: " We have never given up on trying locate and arrest Tams since he absconded in 2007 and in recent months Major Crime Team detectives have followed a number of leads which have led to his arrest.

"This should act as a warning to criminals and more importantly reassure victims that we will continue to track down offenders and make sure they are put back before the court.
