Targeting metal thieves

Dated: 18 Mar 2010

Northumbria Police is tackling scrap metal theft by launching a three pronged attack to target North Tyneside offenders.

With the value of scrap still rising police are stepping up their response to thieves by working with partners.

Officers are using intelligence led operations to target offenders and working with partners at the Environment Agency and VOSA (Vehicle and Operator Services Agency) to make sure that all offences are dealt with appropriately.

PC Matt Batson, from Wallsend said: "Officers are stopping and checking vehicles containing scrap metal to make sure the load does not contain stolen property, is safely loaded and does not pose a danger to other road users.  Any suspected stolen property will result in an arrest."
