Man assaulted

Police are appealing for witnesses after a 22-year-old man was assaulted in Whitley Bay.

The incident happened between 11.55pm on Saturday, May 26 and 00.09am on Sunday, May 27, in a grassed area of Newsteads Drive in Whitley Bay.

A man was walking home after visiting friends when he was approached by a group of men. He was punched to the ground by them and they used what is believed to be a knife to scratch him, breaking the skin, but not causing serious wounds.

The offenders made off and the man managed to walk towards home and seek help. The ambulance service was called and the victim received medical treatment.

Officers are investigating this assault and are carrying out enquiries in the area.

Police are making house to house speaking to residents and additional officers are on patrol to reassure the community.
