Police in Gateshead are driving home Operation Juggernaut - to tackle alcohol related disorder.

The initiative is responding to concerns raised by residents in Bensham and Shipcote about disorder. Local people have told officers about groups of young men drinking in the street and house parties going on into the early hours that are causing a disturbance in the community.

Inspector Michael Robson, of Gateshead Central Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "This is an issue we're determined to tackle as we know it affects the quality of life for our residents. We're working with Gateshead Council to do all we can to help people experiencing problems around alcohol related disorder.

"Officers are visiting local off-licences to make sure staff are asking for proof of age from younger looking customers, to prevent under 18s from getting hold of alcohol.

"We are speaking to people who have caused disorder in the past, to advise them against repeating this behaviour. Officers will be carrying out extra patrols in these key areas and will take necessary action to prevent further incidents."
