Police dogs' action leads to arrests

Dated: 10 Jul 2012

One of the force's four legged detectives has been praised after helping to snare two suspected burglars in Northumberland.

In the early hours of Monday, July 2, police received a report of a burglary to a caravan at the Berwick Holiday Park in Magdalene Fields.

A TV and DVD player were taken. Officers attended and enquiries were carried out at the scene.

A police dog handler was called and the dog picked up a trail at the scene and led officers into the Sea View housing estate where officers recovered the TV from the garden of a house.

A man and a woman were arrested in connection with the burglary and a TV and DVD player recovered.

Northumberland Chief Inspector David Felton said: "This should send a warning out to anyone coming into Northumberland to commit offences that we have a range of resources available to help us to detect crimes.

"The work our dog handlers and police dogs do is extremely valuable and they did a fantastic job in picking up a scent at the scene and leading us to recover the stolen items."

The man and woman have been released on bail pending further enquiries.
