Security reminder after scooter thefts
Dated: 10 Jul 2012
Police in Newcastle are reminding children and parents to keep their scooters secure when not in use.
Over recent weeks officers in West Denton have seen an increase in thefts of bikes and scooters, particularly MGP scooters, which can cost hundreds of pounds.
The thefts have been opportunist - taken from gardens or outside houses when youngsters have popped inside - sometimes just for a few seconds.
Neighbourhood Acting Sergeant Adam Hogarth said: "These thefts, which are causing distress for youngsters and their parents, can be easily avoided. If scooters and bikes are brought inside a locked house or outbuilding when they're not being used it can save a lot of heartache.
"It only takes a thief a second to take property that's been left unattended."
Anyone who has any information about recent thefts or has been offered a bike or scooter for sale in suspicious circumstances is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
