Reward offered after aggravated burglary

Dated: 10 Jul 2012

Police are hoping that a £3,000 reward offered by Crimestoppers will provide information into an aggravated burglary in Northumberland.

Around 11pm on Tuesday, June 26, three men broke into a house in Capheaton. They threatened the occupants of the house and tied them up.

One of the men stole the couple's black VW Scirroco and used it to drive to their nearby jewellery shop in Kirkharle Courtyard. An amount of jewellery was taken from the shop as well as jewellery from the couple's house. The men then fled the scene and dumped the car in Acomb near Hexham.

Enquiries into the burglary are ongoing and officers have been speaking to local people and checking CCTV footage in the area as well as linking in with neighbouring police forces in Cumbria, Durham and Lothian and Borders.

Independent crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers is now offering a reward of up to £3,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the persons responsible for the aggravated burglary.

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Bentham said: "We are following up a number of lines of enquiry and hope that the reward that Crimestoppers is putting up could make the difference in us finding those responsible. I'd ask anyone with any information into the burglary to contact us or Crimestoppers."

North-East Regional Manager for Crimestoppers, Dave Hunter, said: “This was a horrible ordeal for the victims who should be allowed to feel safe in their own home.

“The people responsible for this crime should not be allowed to get away with these despicable actions, and for this reason I am appealing to the public for their help in coming forward with any information they might have about this incident."

By contacting Crimestoppers your anonymity is guaranteed and you will not have to give a statement to the police or go to court.
