Police are appealing for witnesses after three burglaries in an area of Gateshead.

They all happened between 7pm and 9pm on Friday, March 28, two at Broom Lane, and one at Rokerby Avenue, all in Whickham.

At one of the Broom Lane addresses a window was forced but nothing was stolen from inside. At Rokerby Avenue cash and jewellery was stolen, while at the second Broom Lane address jewellery worth thousands of pounds was stolen.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

DS Craig Metcalfe of Gateshead CID said: "Anyone who saw suspicious activity in this area between 7pm and 9pm on Friday night is asked to get in touch with police.

"In addition, anyone who knows the whereabouts of the stolen property or who is offered jewellery for sale under unusual circumstances is also asked to contact us.

"We're doing everything possible to trace the person or people responsible for these burglaries, which we do believe are linked, and extra patrols are being carried out to reassure residents."

Police are also urging residents to secure their homes and report anything suspicious to police. Residents are reminded to lock doors and windows at all times and remove anything of value such as keys and mobile phones from within sight or reach of windows and doors.

They should consider installing deterrents such as CCTV, security lighting or an alarm, and report any unusual or suspicious people they see in their neighbourhood to police straight away.

The advice is part of Northumbria Police's Operation Soundwave, aimed at tackling those involved in thefts and burglaries across the force.

Anyone with information about the burglaries is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191, for the attention of Gateshead CID, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
