Man dies in Gateshead crash

A man has died following a crash in Gateshead.

It happened at 2.21pm, when police received a report that, for reasons yet to be established, a Peugeot 308 had left the road and collided with a hedgerow, causing it to roll onto its roof.

The incident took place eastbound on the A692 Lobley Hill Road, near the junction with Schoolhouse Lane at Marley Hill.

The driver of the car, a man aged 49, was subsequently pronounced dead.

The front seat passenger, a 53-year-old woman, was taken by air ambulance to Newcastle's RVI where she is receiving treatment for injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.

The road was closed for four hours to allow for investigation and vehicle recovery.
