A man has been arrested after a woman was assaulted in Gateshead.

It happened about 2pm on Wednesday, April 23, at the High Street in Wrekenton, when a 20-year-old woman in a wheelchair was jabbed in the hand with a needle by a man she passed in the street.

She attended Queen Elizabeth Hospital to be checked over and was released shortly afterwards. She suffered a minor injury and was shocked following the incident.

Police arrested a 35-year-old man on suspicion of assault and he's been bailed pending further enquiries into the incident.

DI Sharon Chatterton said: "This is quite an unusual incident which was obviously a shock for the victim, and she was checked over at hospital. I'd like to reassure people that a man has been arrested in connection with the assault and he has been bailed while the investigation continues.

"Enquiries are ongoing and I'd appeal for any witnesses to the assault to get in touch with police."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191, quoting reference 574 23/04/14, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
