Events taking place in Newcastle

Latest information on the number of events taking place in Newcastle on Saturday, May 17.

English Defence League (EDL)

On Friday evening (May 16) a route for the EDL march and assembly was agreed with police and organisers.

The route they will take has been agreed as:

Meeting in Bigg Market at 1pm >> march along Collingwood Street >> up Westgate Road >> along St James Boulevard >> onto Barrack Road >> into Leazes Park

They will then hold their assembly in Leazes Park. This will last for approximately an hour and they will then head back to the Bigg Market where they will then disperse.

Newcastle Unites 

The group propose to meet at the City Hall at 12 noon.

They will then march along John Dobson Street >> New Bridge Street >> Blackett Street >> the Monument

They will then hold speeches at Monument before marching via Gallowgate >> to Barrack Road where they will hold a static protest.

They will then disperse.

Other events

There is an organised cycle ride around the city centre starting at 10:30am at the Civic Centre and lasting approx 30 minutes.

The annual march by the Apprentice Boys of Derry will start at 1pm at Barrack road ending at the Quayside at approximately 1:40pm. 

Events to celebrate the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia take place at Newcastle Civic Centre and the band Little Mix are playing at the Metro Arena on the evening.

All those taking part in today's activity are reminded that the routes have been agreed and Northumbria Police's position has not changed, we will not allow any marches to take place in the west end of Newcastle.

Newcastle is a peaceful city and we expect everyone taking part in all events today to behave appropriately and to respect other people's rights to go about their daily lives safely and with the minimum of disruption.
