Man arrested after attempted robbery

A man has been arrested after an attempted robbery at a South Tyneside shop.

It happened at 9.42am today, Saturday, July 26, at the Nisa shop at Whiteleas Way in South Shields, when a man in possession of a samurai sword went into the shop and asked for money to be handed over.

Staff refused and he left without stealing anything. No one was injured in the incident.

Following enquiries in the area a man aged 20 has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and is currently in custody helping with enquiries.

Police are appealing for any witnesses, anyone who saw the man armed with the sword go into or leave the shop or who saw him in the area is asked to get in touch.

Extra patrols are taking place in the area to gather information and reassure residents.
