Police have arrested a man following a raid at a South Shields address.

Officers executed a search warrant at an address on Galsworthy Road where a 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of cannabis. He received a caution.

The activity forms part of Northumbria Police's month-long crackdown on burglary.

Detective Inspector Caroline Ord, from South Tyneside Area Command, said: "Today's action is linked to the forcewide campaign cracking down on burglary.

"Often burglaries are committed to fund drug use. By targeting those suspected of being involved in drug offences, we aim to put a stop to further crime such as burglaries.

"As always we would urge residents to help us by reporting any suspicious activity so that we can take action."

As the forcewide campaign continues across April, residents are once again reminded to secure their homes to keep burglars at bay.

DI Ord added: "We need residents' help to ensure they don't become a victim of burglary. Make sure windows and doors locked as sneak-in burglaries account for over 40% of burglaries in South Tyneside.

"Don't give thieves an open invite.

"Working together, we can continue to cut crime in the borough and maintain its reputation as a safe place to live, work and visit."

People can contact police on 101, extension 69191 or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
