Police are advising cyclists to keep their bikes secure to prevent opportunist theft.

They're being reminded to make sure their bikes are always left safe and secure, whether inside a shed or garage, or while out on the street.

Officers in Washington have seen an increase in bikes being stolen after being left unattended and unlocked. Other bikes have also been stolen from sheds which again have not used adequate security or after being left unlocked in gardens overnight.

To encourage cyclists to keep bikes locked up, officers will be giving away cycle locks on a first come first served basis outside the Halfords store in The Galleries Retail Park on Friday, May 11 between 10am and 4pm.

Neighbourhood Inspector Paul Stewart said: "We want to remind cyclists of the importance of keeping their bikes secure when they are not on the move."
